The hydropower potential in Nepal depends on the 6000 or more rivers flowing from mountains to hills and plains. Water resources is the major nautral resources identified for the development of Nepal. Nepal has a large hydropower potential out of 43000 MW financialy viable capacity. So far nearly 3.27 % of total potential has been exploited at present.

Hydropower development remained a state monopoly in Nepal for a long time. Hydropower Development Policy of 1992, Electricity Act, 1992 and Water Resources Act, 1992 opened the door for investment in hydropower development to the private sector. Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank of Nepal) has categorized hydropower projects as one of the priority sectors for investment. Nepali banks and financial institutions have also shown interest to provide loans in this sector. Hence, it is an emerging sector in the country.

This is a first project of Terhathum Power Company Ltd. is 7.5 MW Upper Khorunga Khola Small Hydro Power Project,

The project structures lies in Manchhyam Rural Municipality ward No. 5  and ward No. 6 of Terhathum District. The project’s headworks site is spread in of the former Srijung VDC and powerhouse site is located at Morahang VDC. The project encompasses an area between latitude 27o11’24” N to 27o13’59”N and longitude 87o31’20” E to 87o32’30” E,

Projcet has been commercialy operated from 29th February 2020 (B.S. 17th Falgun 2076). It is designed to take water from Khorunga & Iwa Khola, generate 42.958GWh of energy, having its powerhouse at Moahang VDC in Terhathum. A 5 KM long 33 kV transmission line will transmit the produced power to 33 kV Jirikhimti Substation.

Terhathum Power Company has been started 2 MW Khorunga Tangmaya  project as a Casket project of Mathilo Khorunga Kola Small Hydro Power Projcet, we hope new projcet can be able to improve substanabilty of the company and provide additional benefits to the shareholders.
